Coast Guard Finds 80 Bales of Pot on Sailboat

As the U.S. Coast Guard approached the sailboat early Monday, two people fled, officials reported.

During routine patrols early Monday in Newport Beach, the U.S. Coast Guard found a sailboat carrying about 80 bales of marijuana, officials reported.

The Coast Guard crew spotted the sailboat about 1 a.m. entering the Newport Harbor. As the crew approached it, the sailboat's pilot reportedly veered to the right and ran it onto the beach on Balboa Island, according to Seth Johnson, Coast Guard spokesman.

Two people on board jumped off the sailboat and ran away, Johnson said.

Once onboard, the crew found about 80-90 bales of marijuana.

The case is being investigated by the U.S. Immigration and Customs and Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations.
