More than 100 Marines will roll up their sleeves to wash cars next weekend in Newport Beach and community support is encouraged.

The Newport Beach 1st Battalion 1st Marines Foundation Car Wash is scheduled for Saturday, July 27 at Newport Dunes from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Bill Long, a foundation volunteer, said the unit is made up of about 800 Marines which the car wash funds will be donated to help with a variety of expenses.

"The Marines are always so happy to do this. Some of them have been wounded as they recently came back from their tour in Afghanistan," Long said. "Sometimes Marines can't be home for Christmas, so this is the money we use to throw a Christmas party for their kids or to help pay for a Marine to get home for the holidays."

According to Long, the 1st Battalion,1st Marines is "one of the most decorated and distinguished units in the Marine Corps." The unit is historically known for being the first to enter combat when a conflict arises.

The city of Newport Beach adopted the 1st Battalion,1st Marines in December, 2003 to help the Marines, sailors and their families.
