Huge Waves Expected to Pound the Wedge

The new year is going to bring waves as high as 14 feet this week to Newport Beach.

Get your cameras ready! A pair of large storms in the North Pacific will be making big waves at the Wedge in Newport Beach this week, according to the National Weather Service.

Beaches that are susceptible to northwest swells, including , will see wave sets between 6-to-10-feet on Tuesday, with occasional 15 foot breakers, and between 10-to-14-feet waves on Thursday and Friday, the NWS reported today.

All other local beaches may also see big waves and riptides as well. The Central Coast may see 20-foot sets. The NWS said the large waves, in addition to the high tides caused by the moon, can cause ponding along the oceanfront on some Orange County strands.
