Award-Winning Children's Book Illustrator Coming to Newport Library

Jon Klassen was the recipient of the Caldecott Medal, which is given to the most distinguished American picture book artist for children, according to library officials.

Editor's note: The following is a press release from the Newport Beach Public Library.

The Newport Beach Public Library is pleased to announce the winner of the 2013 Caldecott Medal, Jon Klassen, will be at the Central Library on Sunday, June 2 for a special program beginning at 1 p.m.

The Caldecott Medal is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children. Klassen will talk about how he created the story and the illustrations in his winning book “This is Not My Hat” (Candlewick Press) and do some on-the-spot drawing to give children the feel for what it’s like to illustrate a book.

Considered by many to be the rising star of children’s book illustration, the 32-year-old Klassen not only won the coveted Caldecott Medal for his book “This is Not My Hat,” he also won a Caldecott Honor award for his illustrations for “Extra Yarn,” written by Mac Barnett and the 2012 Theodor Seuss Geisel Honor Book and New York Times Book Review Best Illustrated Children’s Book of the Year for his earlier book “I Want My Hat Back.”

Klassen also illustrated Cats’ Night Out by Caroline Stutson (Simon & Schuster), winner of the prestigious Governor General’s Award for Illustration; and The House Held Up by Trees (Candlewick Press), a picture book by Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Ted Kooser.

The program is part of the Newport Beach Public Library Foundation’s Making Memories for Children program. Making Memories for Children is designed to engage, educate and inspire children ages 5-12, through a series of memorable creative programs sponsored by the Newport Beach Public Library Foundation.

The event will be held in the Library Friends Room, 1000 Avocado Ave. in Newport Beach. Admission is free, but there is a suggested donation of $10.

Event Schedule:

  • Doors open at 12:30 p.m.
  • 1:00-2:00 p.m. program
  • 2:00-3:00 p.m. reception and book signing
