Are You Prepared for an Emergency?

September is National Preparedness Month.

With the 10th anniversary of Sept. 11 comes the realization that emergencies can strike at any time.

This month has been declared by President Barack Obama National Preparedness Month. The city of Newport Beach is encouraging residents to make sure they are prepared for an unexpected disaster or emergency. City officials say there are a few steps to be taken to help ensure you and your family's safety in the event of lack of electricity, water service or access to a grocery store.

  • Make a plan. Every family should develop an emergency preparedness plan so that everyone in the household knows what to do. This site has information on how to make a plan.
  • Build a kit. Every household in Newport Beach should have a disaster supply kit with enough supplies for all household members for at least a few days. Click here for step-by-step instructions on how to build your kit.
  • Get trained. Save the date for the Third Annual Disaster Preparedness Expo on Saturday, Sept. 17, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Central Library.
  • Join the Newport Beach Fire Department Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program this fall to become a certified disaster service worker ready to help the Newport Beach community. Training programs start soon and are free to residents. Get more information by calling 949- 644-3112.
