A.M. Roundup: Explorers Honored; New Chairman for Museum; Weekend Weather

A handful of things happening in and around Newport Beach.

• Three Newport Beach police explorers recently were honored by the Boy Scouts of America and the Orange County Law Enforcement Explorers Advisors' Association. Explorer Sergeant Michael Valadez, 16, received the Life Saving Award for using CPR to save the life of a choking child. Explorer Captain Melinda Green, 17, received the Gold Award for outstanding leadership. Explorer Sergeant Giovanni Almaraz, 17, received the gold award his dedication to the Explorer program, having volunteered more than 500 hours.

• Former U.S. Sailing Team member Tom Pollack has been named the new chairman of the Board of Trustees of . Pollack said in a press release that he plans to unveil a new vision for the area during an event in October. "The new ExplorOcean attraction will put 'fun' back into the dilapidated Fun Zone and will thrill a new generation of kids, teenagers and adults,” he said in the release.

Free screenings for visual acuity, glaucoma, macular imaging and blood pressure will be available at an August 12 at . The event, which is scheduled to run 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., also includes refreshments, prizes and tours. Congressmen John Campbell is expected to be on hand.
