5 Things You Need to Know Today: March 8

A City Council meeting, a school board meeting and Patch Whiz Kids.

1. The Newport Beach City Council will meet today at 7 p.m. at the council chambers, 3300 Newport Blvd. Read the agenda here.

2.  The Newport-Mesa Unified School District's board meeting is scheduled for today, at 7 p.m., 2985 Bear St., Costa Mesa. Read the agenda here.

3. Do you know a kid or teen who has done something amazing in class, out on the field, in the community or at home? We want to hear about these amazing children and teens and select one each week as the Patch Whiz Kid. Submit your nomination to nisha.gutierrez@patch.com. Be sure to include all of the following information: nominator's name and e-mail address, and Whiz Kid's name, age, school, accomplishment and "key to awesomeness" (what made him/her successful).

4. Applications for seasonal ocean lifeguard positions with the Newport Beach Fire Department are due Wednesday, March 9, at 5 p.m.  Applicants will compete in both a 1000 meter swim and 1000 meter run-swim-run on Sunday, March 13. The top finishers will be invited to a 100-hour training academy to learn essential lifeguard skills. Classes will be held on weekends this spring. Starting pay for seasonal ocean lifeguards is $16.76 per hour. For more information, call 949-644-3177 or click here.
