5 Things You Need to Know Today: March 7

A bicycle safety meeting, lifeguard tryouts and senior scholarships.

1. The Newport Beach Citizens Bicycle Safety Committee will meet today from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the Newport Beach Central Library, 1000 Avocado Ave. See the agenda here.

2. If you are interested in trying out for a seasonal ocean lifeguard position with the Newport Beach Fire Department, applications are due on Wednesday, March 9 at 5 p.m.  Applicants will compete in both a 1000 meter swim and 1000 meter run-swim-run on Sunday, March 13. The top finishers will be invited to a 100 hour training academy to learn essential lifeguarding skills. Classes will be held on weekends this spring. Starting pay for seasonal ocean lifeguards is $16.76 per hour. For more information, call 949-644-3177 or click here.

3. Help raise money for the Corona del Mar High School Foundation by signing up to receive daily Plum Deals, which sends members a deal that relates to them and their busy lives—everything from spa treatments and restaurants to family outings and kids' activities. It's easy to participate. Just click on plumdistrict.com to get started. For every person who signs up, Plum District will donate $3 to the CDM foundation.

4. The Corona del Mar High School PTA will award $600 scholarships to 15 graduating seniors. The scholarships reward and encourage good students who have proven involvement in meaningful extracurricular activities, made positive contributions to the school and community, and have shown diligence and/or creativity in achieving academic and/or personal goals, ethical and moral behavior and development of a vision for the future. A 2.5 GPA is required but is not the leading criterion. Applications are available in the counseling office today and must be returned there by May 13 at 1:30 p.m.
