5 Things You Need to Know Today: Feb. 8

A City Council meeting, a practice SAT and Patch Whiz Kids.

1. The Newport Beach City Council will meet today at 7 p.m. at the council chambers, 3300 Newport Blvd. Read the agenda here.

2. Get ready for the SAT! On Saturday, Feb. 12, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., a mock ACT/SAT testing will be held at the Lincoln Elementary School gym, 3101 Pacific View Dr. It costs $10 take the test; proceeds will benefit the Newport Beach Youth Council. Participants need to bring a calculator and two No. 2 pencils.

3. Do you know a kid or teen who has done something amazing in class, out on the field, in the community or at home? We want to hear about these amazing children and teens and select one each week as the Patch Whiz Kid. Submit your nomination to nisha.gutierrez@patch.com. Be sure to include all of the following information: nominator's name and e-mail address, and Whiz Kid's name, age, school, accomplishment and "key to awesomeness" (what made him/her successful).

4. The OASIS Senior Center in Corona del Mar is offering the AARP Tax-Aide Program to provide free personal income tax assistance to middle- and low-income taxpayers. Tax counselors will be available for Friday appointments through mid-April. Call the OASIS administration office at 949-644- 3244 to schedule an appointment.

5. Today will be mostly cloudy, with highs in the low 60s, according to the National Weather Service.
