5 Things You Need to Know Today: Feb. 7

A bicycle safety meeting, income tax assistance and disaster-preparedness training.

1. The Newport Beach Citizens Bicycle Safety Committee will meet today from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the Newport Beach City Hall's fire conference room. See the agenda here.

2. The OASIS Senior Center in Corona del Mar is offering the AARP Tax-Aide Program to provide free personal income tax assistance to middle- and low-income taxpayers. Tax counselors will be available for Friday appointments through mid-April. Call the OASIS administration office at 949-644-3244 to schedule an appointment.

4. The Newport Beach Fire Department is inviting residents to join the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program. CERT is a nationally recognized Department of Homeland Security training program that teaches residents how to prepare for a disaster. Through the training program, residents will learn how to put out small fires, learn basic medical aid, and learn to save lives by opening airways and controlling bleeding. There are two winter CERT training programs: a Tuesday-Thursday evening program that begins Thursday, Feb. 24, and an all-day Saturday program that begins Saturday, March 5.
