5 Things You Need to Know Today: Feb. 24

Patch Whiz Kids, income tax assistance and a cold day.

1. Do you know a kid or teen who has done something amazing in class, out on the field, in the community or at home? We want to hear about these amazing children and teens and select one each week as the Patch Whiz Kid. Submit your nomination to nisha.gutierrez@patch.com. Be sure to include all of the following information: nominator's name and e-mail address, and Whiz Kid's name, age, school, accomplishment and "key to awesomeness" (what made him/her successful).

2. Former U.S. poet laureate Billy Collins, who is referred to as "the most popular poet in America" by the New York Times, will be at the Central Library on Friday, Feb. 25, from 7 to 8 p.m. Tickets are $50; to order call 949-548-2411.

3.The OASIS Senior Center in Corona del Mar is offering the AARP Tax-Aide Program to provide free personal income tax assistance to middle- and low-income taxpayers. Tax counselors will be available for Friday appointments through mid-April. Call the OASIS administration office at 949-644-3244 to schedule an appointment.
