5 Things You Need to Know Today: Feb. 16

Service awards, a Planning Commission meeting and a visit with the mayor.

1. The PTA is accepting nominations for its Honorary Service Awards, designed to recognize teachers, coaches, staff members, parents and community members who have provided outstanding services to CDMHS. The awards will be given in the spring. If you are interested in nominating someone, send an e-mail to  lizkennedynb@gmail.com with the person's name, information about why he or she deserves recognition, and contact information of others who might be willing to give additional information about the nominee. Nominations will be accepted through Feb. 27. 

2. There will be a Planning Commission meeting tomorrow, Feb. 17, at 6:30 p.m., at Newport Beach City Hall council chambers, at 3300 Newport Blvd. 

3. On Saturday, Feb. 19, from 9 to 10:30 a.m., Mayor Michael Henn will be at the Newport Harbor Nautical Museum to meet and talk with community members. Residents are encouraged to stop by to ask questions, make suggestions and discuss city issues. The museum is in the Balboa Fun Zone at 600 E. Bay Ave., Newport Beach.

4. Do you know a kid or teen who has done something amazing in class, out on the field, in the community or at home? We want to hear about these amazing children and teens and select one each week as the Patch Whiz Kid. Submit your nomination to nisha.gutierrez@patch.com. Be sure to include all of the following information: nominator's name and e-mail address, and Whiz Kid's name, age, school, accomplishment and "key to awesomeness" (what made him/her successful).
