5 Things You Need to Know Today: Feb. 11

A sobriety checkpoint, a practice SAT and Patch Whiz Kids.

1. The Newport Beach Police Department will conduct a driver's license and sobriety checkpoint between 9 p.m. today and 3 a.m. tomorrow on Newport Boulevard near Finley.

2. Get ready for the SAT! Tomorrow, Feb. 12, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., a mock ACT/SAT  practice testing will be held at the Lincoln Elementary School gym, 3101 Pacific View Dr. It costs $10 to take the test; proceeds will benefit the Newport Beach Youth Council. Participants need to bring a calculator and two No. 2 pencils.

3. The Corona del Mar Branch Library will host a family event tomorrow, Feb. 12, from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Stop by to listen to favorite folk and fairy tales, sing songs and participate in crafts for the whole family.

4. Do you know a kid or teen who has done something amazing in class, out on the field, in the community or at home? We want to hear about these amazing children and teens and select one each week as the Patch Whiz Kid. Submit your nomination to nisha.gutierrez@patch.com. Be sure to include all of the following information: nominator's name and e-mail address, and Whiz Kid's name, age, school, accomplishment and "key to awesomeness" (what made him/her successful).

5. Today will be sunny, with highs in the low 70s, according to the National Weather Service.
