5 Things You Need to Know Today: Dec. 18

1. This is the last weekend that Santa Claus will be at Roger's Gardens. Visit today and tomorrow from noon to 6 p.m. and stop by the Disney gazebo, where Santa Claus will be listening to children's Christmas lists. For more information, read our story here.

2. The 102nd Annual Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade continues tonight at 6:30 p.m. The parade, which charts a 14-mile route through the harbor, can be viewed from public waterfront areas on the Balboa Peninsula and Balboa Island, as well as from several waterfront establishments along the route. Check the boat parade website for viewing and other information.

3.The Newport Beach Fire Department's Spark of Love Toy Drive continues to be underway and thousands of toys are still needed. Unwrapped toys and sports equipment can be dropped off at all local fire stations, including station No. 5 in Corona del Mar. Read our story here.

4. The PTA is continuing to accept nominations for its Honorary Service Awards, designed to recognize teachers, coaches, staff members, parents and community members who have provided outstanding services to CDMHS. The awards will be given in the spring. If you are interested in nominating someone, send an e-mail to  lizkennedynb@gmail.com with the person's name, information about why he or she deserves recognition, and contact information of others who might be willing to give additional information about the nominee. Nominations will be accepted through Feb. 27. 

5. Today will be cloudy with a 50 percent chance of showers in the evening, and highs will be in the low 60s, according to the National Weather Service.
