Sur La Table Collecting Recyclable Coffee Capsules

It is estimated that about 5 billion coffee capsules are purchased each year. Recycling efforts will help keep the capsules out of local landfills.

Sur La Table in Corona del Mar is currently accepting two brands of coffee capsules for recycling to help divert them from local landfills, officials announced in a news release.

Sur La Table stores nationwide, including the CdM store, currently have recycling receptacles for single-serve Nespresso or illy iperEspresso machines to help keep the coffee capsules out of landfills. All capsules are sent to TerraCycle where the leftover coffee inside the capsules will be sent to an industrial composting facility, according to officials, and the packaging from the capsules will be recycled into a variety of new products.

“Since curbside recycling is not an option for the capsules, it is great that illy and Nespresso have worked with their key retail accounts to give consumers a way to recycle the used capsules where they purchase new ones,” Tom Szaky,  TerraCycle's chief executive officer, said in a released statement. “It’s extremely important to consider the environmental impact of our daily coffee habits and make a difference where you can.”

Officials said an estimated five billion coffee capsules are sold every year in the United States.

If you want to recycle your Nespresso or illy coffee capsules, drop them off at Sur La Table located at 832 Avocado Ave. in the Corona del Mar Plaza.
