Top Newport Philanthropists Honored

Newport Beach's top philanthropists are honored for their support of local communities and education.

A Newport Beach entrepreneur and a corporate powerhouse were among the top honorees at this month's National Philanthropy Day Orange County celebrations in Garden Grove.

The PIMCO Foundation and Ronald M. Simon, founder of the Simon Scholars Program and Simon Foundation for Education and Housing , joined the list of Orange County’s top philanthropists, business leaders and individuals honored at the 2012 National Philanthropy Day Orange County Awards Luncheon held on Thursday, Nov. 15 at an event that raised $75,000 for educational programs.

  • PIMCO has a long track record of giving back to the community through various outreach efforts, including through its partnership with the Orange County Food Bank’s Share the Harvest campaign. Over the last several years PIMCO has raised money to purchase food to pack into thousands of food boxes for needy families. Through the PIMCO Partners Program, which promotes employee volunteerism, 850 employees volunteered more than 8,864 hours to benefit more than 100 local nonprofits.
  • Ronald Simon tapped into his entrepreneurial side and created the Simon Scholars Program which supports economically disadvantaged high school students and helps them achieve life goals. The program offers academic and social support in order to prepare high school students for college. The Simon Foundation has awarded over 600 scholarships in goods and services valued at over $20M, from a personal foundation created by Simon. Of those who entered the Simon Scholars program, 90.7 percent are still active students or have graduated college.
