News Briefs: Health Alert at Balboa Island; Hoag Doctor's FDA Warning; Mayor's Walk Through CDM

A handful of things happening in Newport Beach.

  • A section of Balboa Island in Newport Beach is under a health advisory today, according to the Orange County Health Care Agency. Earlier this week the Orange County Health Care Agency’s Ocean Water Protection Program posted warning signs at Garnet Avenue at the south side of Balboa Island. According to health officials, the bacteria levels exceed health standards and contact with the water may cause illness.
  • The Food and Drug Administration issued a warning Thursday about the risks of serious injuries and death associated with a vein opening treatment for multiple sclerosis patients. Michael Brant-Zawadzki, executive medical director of the Hoag Neurosciences Institute, helped get the warning to the public by reaching out to the FDA after learning several patients in Orange County had serious complications after undergoing the treatment, known as liberation therapy. “I’m grateful to the FDA for taking the issue so seriously and for its leadership in assuring that patients with MS are fully informed about this questionable procedure, and particularly the potential risks,” Brant-Zawadzki said in a released statement.
  • Residents are invited to join Mayor Nancy Gardner Saturday at 9 a.m. for a 2.75 mile walk through Corona del Mar. Gardner said it is a time for residents to talk about concerns, share ideas and learn about some city projects. Scheduled stops along the route include Buck Gully, Big Corona Beach, the Goldenrod Footbridge and Little Corona Beach.
