Son Inspires Newport Mom to Open Boardsport Shop

Diane Pratt taps into her 12-year-old son's passion to open a new store on Balboa Island.

When Diane Pratt's 12-year-old son Jordan asked her for a Penny skateboard a light bulb went off in her head.

The Newport Beach entrepreneur, and owner of Crush Clothing, had a hunch her son's passion for skateboards could turn into a new business. Today, a year after nurturing the idea, she will officially open the doors to Balboa Boardsports on Balboa Island.

"Our deal was if he wanted one, I would buy it for him if he would help me sell them," Pratt told Patch. "Sure enough he helped me with the display and we sold them quite well right off the bat."

Balboa Boardsports offers board sport, lifestyle equipment and apparel from several brands including Penny skateboards, RVCA, Vans and Volcom. The store will also sell items from underground Orange County brands like Amphibian and Von Bone.

Pratt is expecting a good mix of locals and tourists at the new store. Since last year Pratt and her son have sold more than 1,000 skateboards from Crush Clothing. Jordan spent the summer at a workspace his mom created for him in the front of her store where he got some good practice.

"He was busy changing wheels and bearings and mixing and matching colors," Pratt explained. "The philosophy I am trying to teach him is to find something you love to do and make money at it, and it will never feel like work."

At Balboa Boardsports, Jordan, a 7th grade student at Corona del Mar Middle School, will be a boardsport specialist and will work a couple hours a week. Crush Clothing will also remain open, and so will Jordan's skateboard workshop in the front of the store.

Grand Opening Festivities:

  • Today from 6:30 to 9 p.m. the store will host a fundraiser for Corona del Mar High School girls’ water polo. A percentage of the days’ sales will benefit CDM girls’ water polo.
  • Friday, Nov. 9: Island and Harbor “Residents’ Day” from 7 – 9 p.m.
  • Saturday, Nov. 10: Family/friends/business open house from 7 – 9 p.m.
  • Sunday, Nov. 11: Hourly raffles from noon – 6 p.m.

Balboa Boardsports is located at 213 Marine Avenue on Balboa Island.

Christmas is coming and this store is really cool and has really cool stuff I've never seen before. I have kids 11 and 14 so this store is perfect. It's worth checking out for sure.
