Newport Man Gives CHOC $27 Million Gift

The donation will fund a new pediatric care tower, which will house the county's only pediatric emergency department, at Children's Hospital of Orange County.

A retired Newport Beach businessman donated $27 million to Children's Hospital of Orange County for its new pediatric care tower, the hospital's largest investment from a living donor, officials announced Monday.

The gift from Bill Holmes will help fund the 425,000-square-foot tower which will house the exclusive pediatric emergency department, as well as advanced operating rooms, laboratory, pathology and imaging services. The doors to the seven-story building are scheduled to open in spring at the hospital's main campus in Orange.

“The new tower expands on what CHOC can do for the children in our community," Holmes said in a released statement. "Orange County residents should take tremendous pride in having a world-class pediatric facility here.”

Hospital officials say the tower will be named The Bill Holmes Tower, as a way to thank the businessman for his generous donation. Holmes, no stranger to charitable giving, also previously donated $200,000 to the hospital to name one of the private patient rooms on the oncology floor of the new patient care tower.

“We are grateful to Bill Holmes for this legacy gift and his tremendous investment in pediatric healthcare, improving the lives of children and families here in Orange County and beyond for generations to come,” said Graig Eastin, vice president of CHOC Children’s Foundation.

Holmes’ $27 million donation is part of the Change CHOC, Change the World fundraising campaign, which runs through June. The campaign was designed to help CHOC build the new pediatric care tower, establish an endowment to recruit more of the world’s top pediatric experts who can drive research and clinical breakthroughs and build upon the academic and research affiliation with UC Irvine.
