Hoag Receives Historic Donation

Hoag Hospital Foundation receives the largest donation in its history. The $53 million gift comes from the Jeffrey M. Carlton estate.

The Hoag Hospital Foundation received its largest donation in the Newport Beach hospital's history, officials announced Monday.

The $53 million gift from the estate of Jeffrey M. Carlton will be used by Hoag Hospital to support a variety of areas including advanced technology and innovative programs, officials said in a news release. Robert Braithwaite, the hospital's president and chief executive officer, said the historic donation couldn't have come at a better time.

“As we move into a new era of health care delivery where we must accomplish more with less, every Hoag patient and our entire community will benefit from Mr. Carlton’s generosity," Braithwaite said in a released statement. "We are deeply grateful.”

Hoag officials said the first $15 million will be committed to the Heart & Vascular Institute, which will be renamed the Jeffrey M. Carlton Heart & Vascular Institute as a tribute to Carlton's exceptional gift.

“This will be the first of many ways we plan to honor Mr. Carlton’s extraordinary generosity,” Flynn A. Andrizzi, Hoag Hospital Foundation president and Hoag senior vice president, said.

Carlton, who passed away last year, founded Paramount-based Press Forge in 1978 which is known as one of the largest U.S. suppliers of forging services and products to commercial and military aerospace, nuclear, oil and gas exploration and industrial markets.

Carlton's father, Allan Carlton, Jr., was also a philanthropist and longtime Hoag supporter.

“Jeff’s gift honors his father’s strong affinity for Hoag and commitment to supporting outstanding health care in our community,” Mike Buxton, president of Press Forge, said. “He was very caring about the people around him and he would be very pleased to know that his gift to Hoag is going to touch the lives of so many in such a positive way.”

Andrizzi said the $53 million gift from Carlton represents the beginning to the Foundation’s upcoming campaign which has an initial goal of $500 million by 2020.
