Flavor Rush Feeding Corona del Mar Beachgoers

The gourmet food truck serves more than the everyday beach menu.

Gone are the days when beachgoers would stand in line at a concession stand at Corona del Mar State Beach.

This summer, a food truck is filling people up with food for the day. Flavor Rush—a gourmet food truck—has taken over serving beach patrons and filling the void left when Fuji Grill moved out in November.

Dana Smith, assistant city manager, said that the city began accepting informal proposals to operate the beach's concession in March but that a new contract wasn't forthcoming.

Flavor Rush saved the day by picking up the slack in July and providing consistent service during the week to beachgoers. Wahoo’s Fish Tacos has the weekend shift.

Flavor Rush is owned and operated by Alex and Ted Rodriguez. Although the truck serves burgers, hot dogs and fries, the quality is a cut above average concession food and lives up to its motto, "a taste of the world." The menu often offers surprises, including the Mermaid Delight, a secret mixture of abalone and scallops, and arancine, an Italian dish of breaded risotto and mozzarella.

“In this short time that we’ve been here, we really feel connected to the community," Alex Rodriguez said. “Beachgoers would have no food service if we hadn’t pushed to be here during the week.”

Better equipped than most trucks, and because Ted was trained at the French Culinary Institute in New York, Flavor Rush always offer fresh food, with vegetarian choices such as corn on the cob and grilled tilapia for fish tacos and fish 'n' chips.

"The difference between the chains and us is that we buy fresh food from the farmers market, then add our personal touch while keeping our prices down, ” Rodriguez explained.  “We listen to our customers and try really hard to satisfy everyone we serve, because food is important to us.”

In addition to mouthwatering food, Flavor Rush has also been handing out free ice cream between two and five times a day to beachgoers stung by stingrays.

“It definitely helps ease the pain,” Rodriguez said.
