Cockroaches Close Balboa Sushi

Cockroaches inside a rice bin and on shelves containing soy sauce boxes forced Balboa Sushi 21 to temporarily shut its doors.

After finding cockroaches in the kitchen this month, county health officials closed  Balboa Sushi 21 in Newport Beach.

During a routine inspection on Aug. 5, Balboa Sushi 21 was cited with two major health violations and five minor health violations.

A live nymph cockroach was found in a rice bin, and dead cockroaches were found in a sugar bin, behind a freezer, and on a shelf containing soy sauce boxes in addition to other areas in the restaurant, according to a county inspection report.

Balboa Sushi 21 passed a follow-up inspection a few days later and was allowed to reopen.

Balboa Sushi 21 is located at 600 E. Bay Ave. in Newport Beach.
