A new dog bakery has arrived in Corona del Mar, but there are more than just doggie treats on the shop's menu.
Located in the Corona del Mar Plaza, the newly opened Top Dog Barkery features a bakery case filled with fresh-baked dog treats and shelves stacked with gifts for dog lovers. But owner Karen Mahmalji, who spent several years working in the corporate world, said she decided to open her store after volunteering at the Irvine Animal Shelter.
"I want to have a successful business, but at the same time I want to help dogs get adopted and placed in homes," Mahmalji said.
So along with selling treats and trinkets for dogs and dog lovers, Mahmalji will also be hosting events to help shelter dogs find good homes.
"We did a trial run on Super Bowl Sunday with the Orange County Animal Shelter," Mahmalji said. "They brought in two cats and two dogs and one cat and one dog were adopted."
Adoptiong and dog-fostering events will be held at Top Dog Barkery on a regular basis, Mahmalji said.
Shoppers at the bakery can expect to find a wide range of products, including grain-free dog food like Taste of the Wild, Sojos treats, Bowser dog beds, Tuffy Toys which are double stitched for durability and Dogla dog collars. The store also carries an assortment of cat food, treats and accessories including Whole Life treats and Yeowww catnip.
To celebrate its debut in Newport Beach, Top Dog Barkery is having a premiere opening party on Saturday, Feb. 23 and Sunday, Feb. 24 from noon. to 3 p.m. The party will feature “puparazzi,” a photographer taking red carpet photos of dogs in attendance, doggie door prizes, hors d’oeuvres and a Best Dressed Top Dog Contest and at 1 p.m. each day, in which Fido can show his formal best with the winner receiving a complimentary grooming certificate.
Guests who RSVP on the Top Dog Barkery website for the premiere party will be added to the VIP list, receiving a free swag bag filled with doggie treats and an additional entry for the doggie door prizes.
