Your Patch Guide to Memorial Day Weekend in Orange County

From military tributes to the new-age Lightning in a Bottle festival, there's something for just about everyone.

The Lightning in a Bottle festival, a celebration of art, music and sustainable and alternative lifestyles, runs through Monday in Silverado. The festival will feature more than 50 musicians and bands, art installations, yoga lessons, organic vegetarian food and handcrafts. Speakers on environmental and alternative lifestyle topics will also be featured. The Kidz Village features interactive art, games and workshops. Oak Canyon Park, 5305 Silverado Canyon Road. The Aquatic Water Park at Newport Dunes, 11331 Back Bay Drive in Newport Beach, opens this weekend with a Memorial Day celebration that includes a barbecue, volleyball and horseshoe tournnaments and a cardboard boat regatta that features a $500 prize for the boat that sails the farthest. World War II glider pilot Captain Bob Meyer will give the Memorial Day address in Lake Forest at El Toro Memorial Park, 25751 Trabuco Road. The event will also commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. The one-hour program, which begins Monday at 11 a.m., will include the Saddleback Master Chorale, color guards from local veterans' organizations and a wreath laying ceremony with several city representatives participating. The public is encouraged to attend.

Mission San Juan Capistrano will open "Mission Treasures: Historical Collection Revealed,'' an exhibit of paintings, historic artifacts and documents relating to the mission's history. Included in the exhibit will be mission founder Father Junipero Serra's vestment set, a tabernacle dating from the 19th century and the "Lincoln Document,'' which was signed by President Abraham Lincoln in 1865 and returned the mission to the guardianship of the Roman Catholic Church. Paintings by California artists, including early California impressionists Charles Percy Austin and Joseph Kleitsch, will be included. Mission San Juan Capistrano, 26801 Ortega Highway.

Venetian style. Gondola Adventures has been creating romantic and magical experiences for couples and tourists since 1993. A singing gondolier will even serve you food and drink!

The eighth annual at the Balboa Bay Club & Resort, 1221 W. Coast Highway, Newport Beach, continues through Sunday. More than 60 wineries from around the world will be represented. Live music will be playing as attendees pair wine with seafood, meats, cheeses and desserts. Events include a seminar on European river wines, a cocktail class and a pinot noir challenge. Participants can also enjoy special meals and courses, such as a lobster luncheon, a European breakfast buffet, a barbeque and cigars, cognacs, spirits and sweets. On Saturday evening, "The Grand Tasting" will take place.

On Monday, the KSBR Birthday Bash Jazz Festival marks the 32nd anniversary of the adoption of jazz programming on KSBR-FM (88.5) at Saddleback College. Performers will include saxophone players Paul Taylor and Jackiem Joyner, guitarists Paul Brown, Blake Aaron and Richard Smith, keyboardists Freddie Ravel and Dan Siegel, singer-songwriter Bill Cantos and at least five guest performers who will be announced at the festival. The performers will play each other's music in all-star band configurations. All proceeds will benefit the radio station. Oso Viejo Park, 24932 Veterans Way. Doors open at 3 p.m.; the concert starts promptly at 5.

A wreath-laying, patriotic music, gun salute by the Marines of Camp Pendleton, playing of taps and more will begin at 10:30 Monday morning. The event,  hosted by American Legion Post 222, is at Legion Hall, 384 Legion Street in Laguna Beach.  Assemblyman Chuck Devore will kick off the event with a keynote speech.  

A $1 wine tasting at in San Juan Capistrano begins Saturday at 5 p.m.

The Aliso Viejo Aquatic Center will celebrate Memorial Day on Monday with relay races, sack and egg races, a hula hoop contest, a water balloon contest, live entertainment by local resident DJ Chill!  and chef's specials from the center's Oasis Cafe. There will be two-for-one discounted admission during the event, which runs from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.  29 Santa Barbara, Aliso Viejo. 

Rudy Janiczek, the commanding officer of the city's adopted Headquarters Battalion First Marine Division, will be the keynote speaker Monday at Mission Viejo's Memorial Day ceremony. A bronze memorial plaque honoring Sgt. Jason D. Peto, a Marine who served with Headquarters Battalion and was killed in Afghanistan, will be unveiled. Banners in honor of Peto and Lance Cpl. Ralph J. Fabbri, who was killed in action in Afghanistan, will be displayed. The ceremony will also include a color guard and a bugle player, a rifle salute by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6024 and a performance by the Saddleback Master Chorale. The 53rd annual Garden Grove Strawberry Festival continues through Monday. The festival features more than 40 rides and more than 200 food and commercial booths. A Berry Berry Beautiful Baby Pageant, for children ages 3 months to 3 years old, will begin at 11 a.m. Sunday on Main Street and Acacia Parkway.
