Newport Beach firefighters, runners and families joined in the Tunnel to Towers 5K fundraiser Sunday at Newport Dunes.

Hundreds of runners joined Newport Beach firefighters today for the Tunnel to Towers Run at Newport Dunes Waterfront Resort & Marina.

The run was part of a nationwide tribute to Stephen Siller, a New York City Firefighter who died on Sept. 11, 2001. Siller, 34, perished as he made his way through the Brooklyn Tunnel to the World Trade Center with 60 pounds of gear on his back.

In New York City, the Tunnel to Towers Run allows participants to retrace Siller's fateful footsteps in remembrance of the 343 firefighters who lost their lives on 9/11.
