Storm Runoff Causes Unhealthy Water Conditions in Newport Beach

More than two dozen locations in Newport Beach tested positive for unhealthy bacteria levels following recent rains. Authorities are urging caution for swimmers between rain storms.

The Orange County Health Care Agency has issued a rain advisory in effect across local beaches where recent storm runoff has caused unhealthy bacteria levels that may cause illness.

In Newport Beach, sample results from two days ago found dozens of locations along the coast, Newport Bay and Balboa Peninsula where bacteria levels exceeded state health standards.

Authorities advise swimmers and surfers to stay away from storm drains, creeks and rivers where the possibility that bacteria or chemical from debris from storm runoff may contaminate the water.

Further rain could cause the advisory to be extended past Saturday.

For more ongoing updates, check out the Health Care Agency’s Ocean Water Protection Program.
