Racing Season Kicks-Off at Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club

Editor's note: The following information was released by the Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club.

The racing season at Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club has already started with the first race of the Ocean Racing Series kicking off on January 18, 2014.

Winners of race #1 were Class A - Flaca, skippered by Paul Casanova, Class B – Marisol, skippered by Seth Hall, and Class C – Radical Departure, skippered by Dennis Rosene. The series consists of 8 races with the first 4 raced as a random leg. The second blue water race of the series is on February 8th. The 3rd and 4th races are the famous Bogart Catalina Race on March 1st and 2nd. This overnight race sails to Avalon where Saturday night is celebrated at a fun-filled dinner on the Island and then back to Newport the following day for another party at the club. This is a tradition steeped in history and was originally established in 1949 for the benefit of larger yachts to encourage overnight racing. Humphrey “Bogie” Bogart played another starring role as the skipper of his vessel Santana and won from 1950 to 1954. The original perpetual trophy that Bogart won is being awarded to this day as well as the original ship’s wheel from Bogart’s boat, Santana for best overall. Competitors are sailing up from Dana Point to test their mettle against the locals from Newport Harbor in these exciting and historical races.

The next 4 of the series are buoy races sailed off of Newport Pier on March 22nd, April 12th, June 14th and July 12th.  The series holds something for every type of racer including those racing without spinnakers.

The Harbor 20’s have become a very popular boat in Newport Harbor. The fleet has become so large it was necessary to add a C class along with A and B. The Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club will be sponsoring the Harbor 20 Class in Southern California Yachting Association’s Midwinter Regatta on February 15th and 16th.  With Harbor 20 racers in mind, the Lorin Weiss Series will run on March 16th, April 13th and May 18th. On September 27th, the Harbor 20 Tune-Up will be the last chance to race before the Championship Regatta.

BCYC will also be the organizing club for the Leukemia Cup Regatta.  This two day regatta will host PHRF boats on Saturday June 7th and the Harbor 20 Fleet and Juniors racing Sabots, CFJ, and Lasers on Sunday, June 8th.  All entry fees will benefit the charity.

The Taco Tuesday Summer Series goes from May 13th – August 26th with more than 50 racers coming out for this fun series in the Harbor.  Two separate starts and courses are running each Tuesday, one for the PHRF racers and one for the Harbor 20 fleet.  The fiesta at the club with an incredible Mexican Buffet finishes off a perfect summer night.

The racing season doesn’t stop there.  In the winter months when things start getting dull on the water BCYC starts up the Hot Rum Series.  The race is sailed in Newport Harbor and all boats are welcome.  The first two races of the series are on November 9th and December 14th.  The series resumes in January of 2015 for a total of three races.
