Race for the Cure Seeks Participants

The 20th Annual Race for the Cure aims to raise awareness about breast cancer and money for mammograms and research.

During the past two decades, thousands of people whose lives have been affected by breast cancer have spent a special day together supporting each other and raising money for a cause close to their hearts. In September, they will do it again.

More than 30,000 breast cancer advocates and survivors—including Corona del Mar resident Selma Mann—are expected to come together at the 20th Annual Race for the Cure on Sunday, Sept. 25, at Fashion Island.

"The feeling of being there, surrounded by so much support, is indescribable," said Mann, a breast cancer survivor. "I hope people join the race. It's going to be a wonderful day."

The Komen Orange County Race for the Cure began in 1992. It was created to focus on local breast health education and awareness programs, medical services for low-income women and breast cancer research.

“Funds raised bring breast health resources directly to the women of our community by providing crucial services such as mammograms and diagnostics," said Lisa Wolter, executive director of the Orange County affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

The goal for this year's race is $3.1 million. Participants are encouraged to make a donation of $20 or more to celebrate the race's 20th year. Participants are also encouraged to raise at least $125, the average cost of a mammogram.  Statistics show that one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. Komen officials say nearly 1,900 women in Orange County will face a diagnosis of breast cancer this year.
