Balboa Peninsula Landscaping Spilling Onto Public Sand

Homeowners have created "yards" on beachfront property that the California Coastal Commission says must be removed.

A battle is brewing between residents on the Balboa Peninsula and the California Coastal Commission over swing sets, plants, lounge chairs, yard decor and other landscaping upgrades that officials say is encroaching on the public beach.

As first reported by the Los Angeles Times, the California Coastal Commission says upgrades that extend beyond homeowner property lines must be removed. Some of the items -- including fire pits, birdbaths and portable basketball courts-- are seemingly simple removals, but others -- including revamped landscaping, sprinkler systems and patches of green grass -- might take a little more time and effort.

Today in Newport Beach, some residents said they were disappointed to hear the news of the required removals.

"We walk every day and I think it looks kind of pretty," Katy Kaufman said.

Another resident, who declined to give his name for fear of retribution, said the landscaping should be allowed to stay in place.

"It's a shame they have to tear out what is otherwise attractive landscape that enhances the overall look of the beach," he said. "It does not impede beach access, plenty of sand to go around."

Do you think the Coastal Commission is nitpicking, or is it doing its job and protecting public space? Tell us in the comments.
