Newport Couple to Ride eHarmony's Rose Parade Float

Walter and Barbara Smith, of Newport Beach, will be featured as the 'Golden Years Couple' on eHarmony's float in the Tournament of Roses Parade on New Year's Day.

Walter and Barbara Smith signed up for eHarmony's online dating service eight years ago, and on New Year's Day will be featured on its Rose Parade float as the 'Golden Years Couple.'

The Smiths signed up for eHarmony when they were both 74 and living in different cities. The couple were matched by eHarmony back in 2005, and married quickly in a large family wedding, eHarmony officials reported. Today the 83-year-olds live in Newport Beach.

“I thought Diamond Bar was too far away and he thought that a retired police officer would be a muscular masculine type of woman,” Barbara Smith said of their initial online meeting.

But as fate would have it, the couple has proven to be a perfect match.

On New Year’s Day, the Smiths will ride the eHarmony float during the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena. They will be accompanied by six other couples celebrating the finding of “Everlasting Love,” as Natalie Cole performs This Will Be (An Everlasting Love) live from the float.
