Newport Beach Mayor Talks Pooches and Trash

In her monthly newsletter, Mayor Nancy Gardner asks residents to keep a closer eye on pets and trash cans.

Newport Beach Mayor Nancy Gardner says dog droppings and trash cans have created a mess in Corona del Mar.

In her March newsletter, Gardner says it has been brought to her attention that some residents fail to pick up after their pooches while taking them for a stroll around the village.

"Pick up, people. There are still some of you that don’t," Gardner wrote. "I’m a dog owner and inordinately fond of him, but remember that not everyone finds your animal as darling as you do which is why leash laws were invented."

Trash littering the streets and alleys in CDM is another issue on Gardner's radar. She says ravens, racoons and rats have been having a field day with the leftovers and food wrappers found in trashcans and has asked city staff to look into trash improvements in the area.

"Our alleys are like one huge fast-food strip mall since most people keep their trash cans outside," Gardner said. "Many of the cans don’t have lids making it particularly easy for dining, but even those with lids, unless they fit tightly, are a minor challenge for clever-fingered raccoons."
