Newport Beach Councilman Tony Petros will speak today at an event in honor of National Eating Healthy Day.

Petros, who survived a widow-maker heart attack a few months ago, will attend the American Heart Association's National Eating Healthy Day event and share his story to help encourage healthy eating habits among residents.

Resident Jack McDonnell, who suffered a massive heart attack after years of smoking, eating unhealthy food and living a sedentary lifestyle, will also share his story.

The event will be held from 6-7 p.m. at Nemeyer & Dillion, LLP,  located at 895 Dove St., 2/F in Newport Beach.

Statistics from the American Heart Association:

-More than 60% of adults in the U.S. are overweight or obese

-One in three American kids and teens is overweight or obese

-Heart disease and stroke are America’s No. 1 and No. 4 killers

-Eating an overall healthy diet reduces a majority of the controllable risk factors for heart disease and stroke

-The American Heart Association recommends at least 4.5 cups of fruit and vegetables a day, but fewer than half of Americans eat five or more servings on five or more days per week
