Battle of the Bay to Benefit Liz Lord

This week's Battle of the Bay between Corona del Mar and Newport Harbor high schools' boys volleyball teams will help raise money for Orange County native Liz Lord.

Orange County native Liz Lord was a fierce volleyball competitor during her time at Newport Harbor High School, but today she's in the middle of a life-threatening battle with brain cancer and could use her community's support.

Lord, 27, graduated from NHHS in 2002 and moved to Oregon after receiving a full volleyball scholarship to the University of Portland. In March she was diagnosed with stage 4 glioblastoma brain cancer. The medical bills are piling up fast, and her friends are now asking the community to step in and help support Lord while she fights for her life. On Friday, May 6, at 4:30 p.m., the Battle of the Bay, between Corona del Mar and NHHS boys' volleyball teams, will take place at the CdM gym. Proceeds from the event will be donated to help with Lord's medical bills.

Cari Smith was friends with Lord in high school and is encouraging everyone to attend the fundraiser.

"Liz was super-involved in the community, and now the community can get involved with Liz," Smith said. "Why shouldn't people participate? A little bit goes a long way."
