Five Things You Didn't Know About Solar Companies But Should

Solar has become a booming industry, ranking year after year as one of the fastest growing industry. Consumers are feeling inundated and overwhelmed by all of the solar companies.

 Here are five things to remember when getting a bid:

1. Tired of cold calls and solar companies knocking on your door without knowing their credibility? 

Validate a company's years in service on the California State License Board website. Look up the company's rating on the Better Business Bureau (BBB) rating, Yelp, Angie's List will show customer's experiences with the other companies that you are evaluating. 

2. I am sick of pushy sales people and aggressive solicitations. 

Be wary of pushy tactics. Credible solar companies will educate you on solar, not push you into it. You want to be educated on your options not sold. 

3. Can any contractor install solar panels? 

Solar is a highly specialized field that should be installed by state-licensed electricians (C-10 license). It is better to use a company that is focused on solar only and not trying to sell you windows, alarms, or air conditioning. 

4. Should I lease or buy ? What is the difference? 

Solar can be purchased or leased. The main difference is that the lease option you do not receive a Federal tax credit since you don't own the equipment. Be wary of companies not presenting all options available to you. 

5. What should I expect at an in-home appointment with a solar company?  

The company will provide you with a proposal. A proficient proposal will include details on your current electric consumption, the size system, detailed information on the products they are proposing and all financing options available to you. Note, a roof inspection should take place on site at the first meeting to ensure the integrity of the roof is sound and that the system the company is suggesting will fit.
