Wednesday Essentials in Newport Beach: Chamber Meeting, Fair Deals and More

Local events, sweet deals and some handy tips for Wednesday.

1. On Thursday, Aug. 1 the Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce is hosting its Wake Up! Newport meeting at 7:45 a.m. at the Newport Beach Public Library. Dr. Richard Afable of the Covenant Health Network (HOAG-St. Joseph Alliance) and Robert Braithwaite, CEO and president of Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian will speak at the meeting on the future of healthcare. Updates from county, state and federal representatives will also be provided. 2. Casey’s Cupcakes has whipped us some new summer flavors. The new treats include "Smokin' S'mores," "Orange Creamsicle," "Ravishing Raspberry Lemonade," and more. 3. The Orange County Fair continues with its array of pig races, freaky fried food, carnival rides, exhibits and more. Wednesday's highlights include Amazing Dobermans at the Action Sports Arena, performances by The Flaming Lips and The Growlers at the Pacific Amphitheatre and a performance by ABBA tribute band Arrival From Sweden at the Hangar Entertainment Arena. 4. USA.gov is reminding community members about the importance of staying safe while swimming at beaches. The biggest danger of swimming in the ocean is getting caught in rip currents, powerful currents on the surface of the water that can quickly carry you out to sea, according to USA.gov. Watch this video to learn how to avoid and escape them.

5. Today will be mostly sunny with highs around 71 near the coast and 80 to 85 inland. A high surf advisory is in effect through 2 p.m. for the beaches.
