1. The Newport Beach Police Department is celebrating National Night Out today from 4 to 7 p.m. at Bonita Canyon Sports Park. The event will include crime and drug prevention information, home security and child safety tips and more. The Newport Beach Fire Department will also be grilling hot dogs and hamburgers. 2. The Orange County Fair continues till Aug. 11 with pig races, deep-fried food, carnival rides, exhibits and more. Wednesday's highlights include the Orange Crush Demolition Derby at the Action Sports Arena, The Wanted at the Pacific Amphitheatre and Queen Nation at the Hangar Entertainment Arena. 3. The OASIS Senior Center is hosting a silent film event with live music on Wednesday, Aug. 7 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Jeffrey Briar will provide commentary and perform live piano accompaniment to vintage films by Charlie Chaplin and Laurel & Hardy. This free concert is made possible by a donation from the Friends of OASIS.
4. The warm weather is sending many adults and children to the pool, USA.gov
recommends the following safety tips:
- Through the American Red Cross water safety page you can enroll your child in a swimming class and learn where to find U.S. coast guard approved life jackets
- CPR is an important life-saving skill to know during a water related emergency
- Teach your children about the importance of pool safety through this interactive video game: “The Adventures of Splish and Splash”
- Make sure to keep a cell phone and first aid kit close by in case of an emergency
- Remember to apply plenty of sunscreen to reduce the chance of skin damage
