Pitas, a Disaster Meeting and Dating Scams

Events taking place today in Newport Beach.

1. Today at 9 a.m. volunteers who tend to the cultivation of native plants at Newport Bay Conservancy will meet to plant seeds and monitor or maintain previously planted sites. Get more information at newportbay.org.

2. Anyone who donates blood or platelets today at Hoag Blood Donor Services between 11:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., will receive a pita and $5 gift card from Pita Jungle Bistro. Hoag Blood Donor Services is located at 510 Superior Ave., Suite 130. To schedule an appointment call 949-764-5621 or email donateblood@hoag.org.

3. Today from 5:30-7 p.m., Speak Up Newport is hosting a Disaster Preparedness workshop at the Newport Beach Civic Center, 100 Civic Center Dr.  The free event will include a presentation from the Newport Beach Fire Department. Complimentary appetizers will be served from 5:30-6 p.m., with the program from 6-7 p.m.

4. USA.gov wants the public to know an online love interest who asks you for money is most certainly a scam artist. They start by proclaiming their love, in hopes of gaining interest and trust as quickly as they can. Review signs of a scam artist so you are on the look out for blatant signs of a scammer.

5. Today will be mostly sunny, with highs around 70 near the coast and 82-87 inland, according to the National Weather Service.
