Lobsters, S'mores and Yarn Bombing

Local events taking place this weekend in the Newport Beach area.

1. The 5th annual Lobsterfest at Newport Beach, hosted by the Newport Dunes Waterfront Resort & Marina, will take place tomorrow from 3 - 8 p.m. Maine lobster will be flown in fresh and will be prepared on site alongside a buffet that includes shrimp, mussels, tri-tip, corn-on-the-cob, salads and dessert. 2. Tomorrow is National S’mores Day and the Resort at Pelican Hill is inviting anyone with a sweet tooth to try its Deconstructed S'mores dessert, created by pastry chef Jeff Lehuede. The dessert will be available today through Sunday
at the Pelican Grill restaurant. Deconstructed S’mores is created with house-made caramelized vanilla marshmallow and soft salted caramel, served atop a house-made graham cracker, with creamy chocolate, dark chocolate and chocolate-coated graham cracker cereal garnishes. The Resort at Pelican Hill is located at 22701 S. Pelican Hill Road in Newport Coast.

3. The LAB Anti-Mall is hosting Yarn Bombing and Beyond today from 6 to 8 p.m. Volunteers of all knitting and crocheting abilities are welcome to drop off items, or join organizer Alisha Rivera at the LAB to create beanies and scarves that will be donated to cancer patients and blankets to children at Children’s Hospital of Orange County and The Orangewood Children’s Home. The knitted or crocheted items needed are beanies and scarves for Knots of Love, and 10-x-10-inch patches that will be stitched together to create blankets for Project Linus. Find the list of required yarns from Knots of Love and suggested patterns at www.KnotsofLove.org.The LAB is located at 2930 Bristol Street in Costa Mesa.

4. The Orange County Fair continues through Sunday with pig races, deep-fried food, carnival rides, exhibits and more. Friday's highlights include the Damsels of Destruction Demolition Derby at the Action Sports Arena, Rebelution, Matisyahu and Collie Buddz at the Pacific Amphitheatre and Fleetwood Mac tribute band Rumours at the Hangar Entertainment Arena. Saturday's highlights include the Orange Crush Demolition Derby at the Action Sports Arena, a charity concert by Roger Daltrey of The Who at the Pacific Amphitheatre and Oingo Boingo tribute band Dead Man's Party at the Hangar Entertainment Arena. 5. Today will be mostly sunny with highs around 70 near the coast, and 77-82 inland, according to the National Weather Service.
