Literacy Day, Fire Open House and Bunco

Local events today and this week in Newport Beach.

1. Today from 10 a.m. to noon, the Newport Beach Public Library will be celebrating International Literacy Day. The special program will recognize volunteers and tutors, the learners who work hard to acquire new skills and the recipient of the Rochelle Hoffman Memorial Award, an annual award given to a learner that exemplifies the spirit of the program with hard work and dedication to acquiring literacy skills. The event will be held at the Central Library, 1000 Avocado Ave.

2. Save the date! The Newport Beach Fire Department and the Newport Beach Firefighters Association will celebrate Fire Service Day with an Open House, tour of the fire station and live demonstrations at Fire Station 7 on Oct 6., located at 20401 SW Acacia St. in Santa Ana Heights. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

3. Tonight from 5-8 p.m. the OASIS Senior Center is hosting Bunco Night. New players are welcome, the event cost is $10. Bunco will be held at OASIS Room 2, 801 Narcissus Ave. in Corona del Mar.

4. The city of Newport Beach is hosting a fee e-waste collection on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the old City Hall building, 3300 Newport Blvd. Electronics including computers, laptops, cell phones, telephones, fax machines,  monitors, keyboards, printers, scanners, radios, tape players, VCRs, stereo equipment and TVs can be dropped off at the collection site.

5. Today will be mostly sunny with highs of 71-76 near the coast, and 85-90 inland, according to the National Weather Service.
