Friday Essentials in Newport Beach: Woodstock in Newport, Emergency Alert Test and More

1. Don't be alarmed! Today at noon, the city will conduct the monthly Outdoor Emergency Notification System test. For details about the system, read our story here.

2.  The South Shore Yacht Club is hosting Woodstock on the Water 2013 on Saturday, Aug. 3 at 12:30 - 6 p.m. The event will include music from the Newport Beat Band and its Taste of South Shore foodie event. Woodstock on the Water was created for boats, rafts, kayaks, paddleboarders and water lovers to get together and float in Newport Harbor's anchorage area. 3. Horticulturist Steve Hampson will lead a discussion about vegetables, fruit, herbs and more on Saturday, Aug. 3 from 9 to 10 a.m. at Roger's Gardens. Hampson will give planting and pruning tips, how to care for warm season vegetables and more. Roger's Garden is located at 2301 San Joaquin Hills Rd. in Corona del Mar.

4. Today from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., Newport Bay Conservancy will host Wild Tales. Kids ages 2-8 and their parents are invited to visit with staff for storytelling, educational crafts, hands-on activities and nature walks. The event will be held at Upper Newport Bay. 2301 University Dr. in Newport Beach. Students are $5. Parking is free. Call 949-923-2275, or email unbic@ocparks.com to register.

5. Today will be partly cloudy with highs around 72 near the coast, and 80 to 85 inland, according to the National Weather Service.
