A Children's Nature Event, Drug Trends and a Look at Vivante Retirement Community

1. Children ages 2-8 and their parents are invited to the Newport Bay Conservancy today at 10:30 a.m. The event will include arts and crafts, storytelling, hands-on activities and outdoor nature walks. The class is $5. For more information call 949-923-2275 or email

2. The Newport Beach Police Department is holding a DUI checkpoint today. Find out the location, time and more information here.

3. The Orange County Sheriff's Department will be holding an Emerging Drug Trends presentation today from 6:30-8:30 p.m. The presentation will include information on new drugs found in schools and social networking risks. Five meetings will be held around Orange County including at Foothill High School in Santa Ana, the San Juan Capistrano Unified School District and the Laguna Hills Community Center. 4. The community is invited on Friday and Saturday to a sneak peek of Vivante on the Coast, a new luxury retirement community in Costa Mesa. Vivante is scheduled to open in October, and on Friday from 2-7 p.m., and Saturday, from noon to 6 p.m., the public is invited to take a look around the community. Vivante is located at 1640 Monrovia Ave. in Costa Mesa.

5. Today will be partly cloudy, with highs around 80 near the coast and 90-95 inland, according to the National Weather Service.
