What I've discovered is that what kids need the most are also among the simplest of things: TalkingRead More and holding. They don't need gazillion-dollar toys and Mozart in the womb. They need to be held and they need to be talked to and they need to be fed when hungry. Dads can do this, too! You can't imagine the damage done to the human psyche when these basic steps are not taken in the early years. Having parented children who missed these basic needs, I now feel like congratulating every mom in the grocery store who has her baby in the front of the cart, cooing and talking to them throughout what can be a mundane chore. They're doing great and giving the babies/toddlers exactly what they need!
MFriedrich May 7, 2013 at 12:20 am
It's pretty amazing what women can do: grow a baby inside their bodies, deliver the baby throughRead More their bodies, feed the baby with their bodies. Makes the male contribution seem kind of curt and lame. But that's only half of it. There's a whole world of a million little things that end up being really, really big things that matter a ton later on. Those are things frequently unseen or missed that great moms do, but for which I'm grateful. That all said, personally I place mothers of special needs children above all the rest. If it were up to me, they'd get a celebratory day all to their own.
Penny Arévalo (Editor) May 6, 2013 at 07:27 pm
As an adoptive mom, this is a nice sentiment, but it does not tell all the story. Not every adoptionRead More begins with a brave decision by a birth mom to give up her baby. Many children end up abandoned or taken by the state for their own protection. So I say happy Mother's Day to all the foster moms and adoptive moms of older children and a prayer for all those little ones and not-so little ones waiting for their forever families. Let's not forget them either.

What would you prefer? High interest rates make for smaller loans and lower home prices. LowRead More interest rates make for massive loans and high home prices. I think it should be a no brainer for average Americans who disapprove of debt slavery as to why low interest rate policy is a bad thing for the economy and our society. A house is shelter, not a stock. Yet, you would not ever hear this from the National Association of Realtors and the California Association of Realtors. They lobby for the latter. Why? They are supposed to be industry experts and TRUSTED ADVISORS! Do the math. What's better for a commission-only sales person? A home sale at $250,000 or a home sale at $500,000? The realtor has ZERO influence as to the market price of the sale, or the residential community where it takes place. The agency service provided is askew with the price-based commission model (3%). A fixed fee makes more sense. Anyway.....regardless. Bernanke's out soon, rates are going up, and the Fed can't keep buying up mortgage backed securities forever. Also, the Chinese are wise to our upcoming currency crisis. Buying might make sense if you have cash or a ton to put down. All these sales at record low rates and with very little down payment are just going to blow up again once rates rise. Higher rates in the future are going to reduce the available pool of qualified, prospective buyers we're seeing right now.

always has been about sex or the promise of perfection or happiness- it's never changed- RobertRead More Downy Jr's father - Robert D Sr did a movie in the 60's - "Putney Swope" - a good send up of the ad game- I worked as a copywriter in the late 60's and couldn't wait to get out- never disliked a business more than the ad one- yet- some ads are pure genius- many Bud ads definitely- those Honda blowfish ads are incredible - I love a good ad- they are rare
Jeffrey Sabatini April 24, 2013 at 07:22 pm
In the mid 80s & 90s it was "SEX SELLS". The late 90s into 2005 brought us funny adsRead More that centered around dumb stunts, usually ending up with some poor guy getting hit in the 'boys'. Between then and now, the "heart tug" or "real men cry" ads like the Budweiser "Clydesdale friends forever" ad. Which of course was the perfect follower to Bud's "Mascot dog trains horse Rocky style" and "Donkey gets a shot" ads. All ad hall of fame'rs in my humble opinion. Sadly, it looks like the ad world has taken two giant steps backwards with the bevy of male & female eye candy flashed over disclaimers of side effects such as : Nausea, vomiting, uncontrollable flatulence, sudden weight gain, sudden weight loss, skin rash, welts & boils, hair loss, blindness, heart arrhythmia, swollen glands, muscle atrophy, Turrets, short term memory loss and how the product should not be used by or in proximity to pregnant women or nursing mothers. However, I would like to say "feek'n about time" for all the "thank you and honor our military and first responder" theme ads. But if I could change ONE THING in regard to this discussion... It would be to finally apply "Truth In Advertising Laws" to political ads! What say you?
Jeffrey Sabatini April 24, 2013 at 06:37 pm
Advertising is an art in itself. The ad spoof movie Crazy People showed how important the right tagRead More line can be with "Metamucil, use it or you will die!". Or like the motto of my former firearms dealership... "If our guns can't kill it, it's immortal!". Good times, good times.

Running can be a good addiction and a way to balance life. My dad was a hard core long distanceRead More runner who did Boston 7 or 8 times. Dan Avery, I hope you start feeling better. I didn't know you were being paid, the Patch must haveRead More gotten quite a deal having an astute, highly educated leader like you. I've read several of your blogs and they are very well written. Nobody responds to them, but they are well written. Your ideas are those of an educated person drunk with their own knowledge and basking in the sunlight of Liberalism. So please Dan, work away. All the biking you do on streets shared by vehicles is doing way more damage to your health than aRead More fire ring will ever do. If you are so concerned about this particulate matter, why do you live in such a densely populated area? Your arguments are irrational at best. We all know the real reason people want the fire pits taken out...health has nothing to do with it.
Gail Ream April 10, 2013 at 03:56 pm
I do not see how a few fire pits could possibly cause health problems. So you get rid of the fireRead More pits......there are hundreds of other wood burning fires all over Newport Beach...to target firepits is just silly. You have too much time on your hands.

actually, Dick, It's not just Mr. Obama, who I have zero respect for and I think he should beRead More impeached and then tried for the murder of American Citizens. There have been several independent studies that verify 90% of the American people favor background checks and limiting the size of the magazines. You "conservatives" are bring shame onto that label. The rest of us are moving on. Come see me in 2014 after you lose control of the House.

Megan April 6, 2013 at 01:33 pm
I completely agree with Jane Terry. And to add to her argument, if you choose to live close to aRead More beach with fire pits, then you are not suffering involuntarily. You can volunteer to leave if you do not like it.
Jane Terry April 4, 2013 at 04:53 pm
Based on what I have heard to date, the fire pits appear to be a minor source of Particulate MatterRead More (PM). If I am wrong on this, I would like to see the evidence that states they are a major source. Until I believe that they are a major source of PM, I think the fire pits should stay. According to AQMD, Motor vehicles are the major source for Particulate Matter (PM). So, if you take those 5 to 6,000 premature deaths a year due to PM, and you factor in drunk driving, or any other motor vehicle fatality accident, then I think Frank's argument supports a ban on motor vehicles. The argument about the effect on people living nearby just doesn't hold water for me - near as I can tell, they choose to live there despite the smoke. To purchase a home and then later claim a foul against its neighborhood is hypocrisy (and if it is not, can we please begin removing the coyotes from the area, because I am told "they were here first, so they get to stay"). It is akin to asking the Airport to stop flying over our neighborhoods because the noise pollution is too much. Or, more in line with this topic, asking the city to shut down the airport because the autos coming to/from that airport everyday release PM into our air. Don't get me wrong, I support clean air. But to go after the little fish (firepits) when the big fish (motor vehicles) are are the main problem, seems irrational and illogical. And if anyone has a ranking of PM sources, I'd be interested in seeing it.

tiny, Now I've had 2 martinis. Check the time stamp. Clearly I was joking before. According toRead More John and his kind, my older brother is the last one you should listen to. He is an elite; a Yale graduate twice over for God's Sake. And he was President of the National Lawyers Guild, which is an organization that is to the left of the American Bar Association and the ACLU. The ABA is the equivalent of the NRA and the ACLU is sort of like the FDA or something. Back in 1972, one of his New Haven clients was Bobby Seale. He's an expert on "Police Misconduct", a.k.a implantation of evidence, brutality, illegal search and seizure, etc., etc., etc...or otherwise known as keeping John and his law enforcement friends somewhat honest. One year he had 53 cases against the New Haven Police Department. And he argued a police misconduct case in front of the United States Supreme Court. His clients received a unanimous decision in their favor. His clients were a left-wing radical group. In his last case he sued the United States because his four clients sat in prison for life, three of them received the death penalty for a murder the FBI had proof they didn't commit all along. Three of them died in prison. One served 33 years before my brother got him out. In addition here's his newest book: http://amzn.to/10gXJQP I not only listen to him. I am proud of him!

We have a mixed economy, not a free market. The debate always seems to be about the boundaries ofRead More government vs. the market. How is it possible to create an efficient and humane society with an appropriate balance of government and the market? If the market failure has led to greater inequality, what role should the tax system play in the redistribution of wealth? If we do nothing, what are the implications for society and the present status quo? Some choices proposed include: Reduce income taxes on corporations. Raise taxes for the wealthy.
