Your Tab Comes to $35,043, Mr. President

The city of Newport Beach wants its payback from the Obama campaign.

Newport Beach recently sent the Obama campaign a $35,043 invoice to recoup the police department’s costs for the President’s February e.

As reported in The Orange County Register, the invoice was the brainchild of City Manager David Kiff.

"I think it is appropriate to treat it like a private event – if another private event that large and which required that much police presence occurred, we would bill the event sponsor," he told the Register in an email. "If the president was here on presidential business, we likely would not have billed for that."

The exclusive event was held at the home of Jeff and Nancy Stack. Tickets started at $2,500 and ranged from a $10,000-per-person photo reception to a $35,800-per-person breakfast. Wylie Aitken, an attorney and event co-host, said the event raised $1.4 million for Obama's campaign.
