Bicyclist Hit, Injured by ‘Impatient’ Driver

A woman visiting from Las Vegas was injured in a bicycle accident in Newport Beach on Friday evening while riding with a group of friends.

A woman was hit by a car Friday evening while riding her bike with friends in Newport Beach, a witness reported.

The woman and three of her friends, all from Las Vegas, were riding single file on eastbound Pacific Coast Highway at about 5 p.m., according to Leslie Nichols, one of the bike riders. She said the riders, who were not wearing helmets, were at the intersection of Bayshore Drive and PCH when a Cadillac pulled up behind her friend, Amy Yancy, started honking and struck her.

“He was so impatient, he couldn’t wait two seconds until the road curved into the cutaway,” Nichols explained.

Yancy was transported to a local hospital and suffered a head injury, Nichols said.

The driver originally fled the scene but later returned and claimed the crash was Yancy’s fault, according to Nichols.

The group had been out for a casual bike ride as part of their weekend getaway in Newport Beach. There was no bike lane in the area of the crash.

A Newport Beach dispatcher confirmed that police responded to the collision but did not have details about any citations issued.
