Summer Heat Can Be Deadly to Dogs

Newport Beach dog trainer Vladislav Roytapel says its essential to keep your furry friends cool during the dog days of summer.

It's going to be a hot one this weekend throughout Orange County, so be sure to take care of your furry friends by keeping their safety a top priority.

1) Limit the amount of time your dog spends outside, and if you do let him/her out find a cool and shady place for them to lounge.

2) Make sure you have water available at all times for your dog, and it's a great idea to add ice or buy cooling dog bowls.

3) Let your dogs out early in the morning and late at night so they can get more exercise and training during the coolest hours of the day.

4) Don't walk your dogs on asphalt or sidewalks during the hottest times of the day; the ground gets very hot and it can burn their paws.

5) Don't stop at the store to pick up groceries and expect to leave your dog inside the car! Cars will heat up quickly and can have deadly effects on your pet.

6) Let your dog take a dip in the pool, it's a great way to cool off!

Be on the lookout for signs of heat exhaustion in your dog, which include excessive panting, drooling, trouble breathing, vomiting, restless behavior and  diarrhea. If your dog exhibits any of these symptoms give him/her water immediately and take your pet into a cool place. Call your veterinarian if the symptoms get worse.
