OCTA Awards Funds to Newport Bicycle Projects

Newport Beach receives funding for bike lane improvements on San Joaquin Hills and Spy Glass Hill roads, Eastbluff Drive and Jamboree Road.

Bike projects in Newport Beach and other local cities will receive thousands of dollars to improve bike connections throughout the county following the Orange County Transportation Authority board’s approval of funding for 23 projects on Tuesday.

Several Orange County cities will receive a portion of $9.4 million to add new bike lanes and trails, build bridges and crossings for cyclists, improve signs and add bike racks. In Newport Beach, the city will be awarded $64,917 for bike lane improvements on San Joaquin Hills Road, $31,265 for improvements on Spy Glass Hill Road, $235,420 for the Eastbluff Drive/Ford Road bike lane improvements and $90,930 for the Jamboree Road improvements.

With the city’s matching funds, the project totals $1,492,920.

“Bicycles are an ideal way to get around Orange County and OCTA believes strongly in improving this mode of transportation,” said OCTA Chairman Paul Glaab. “This is a collaborative effort with cities throughout Orange County and we look forward to providing a better ride for all cyclists.”

In February, OCTA invited agencies to compete for these grants through the Bicycle Corridor Improvement Program.
