Moms Talk: Autism Awareness Month

Do vaccines cause autism?

Thank you for joining this week’s Moms Talk  (the name notwithstanding, dads, grandparents, expecting parents and even people with no kids are welcome and encouraged to contribute). Every Thursday, check out a new Moms Talk discussion on Corona del Mar Patch. Help add to our conversation and leave a response in the comment section below this article. If you have a question that you'd like our Moms Council to answer, send us an e-mail.

As a mother of an infant, I am scared to death that the choices I make for my child can be life-changing. But is that the case with autism? The U.S. Centers for Disease Control reports that autism affects one in every 110 children in America. While it is certain that some cases of autism have a genetic basis, what about the arguments that food allergies, vaccines and/or poor nutrition can also cause your child to become autistic? I have friends and family that either have an autistic child or work with autistic children, and my child's pediatrician has a child who is autistic. So when consulting each of them regarding the causes of autism and their personal experiences, I have found that either they believe strongly that vaccinations are a cause of autism or strongly that they are not.  I believe that parents are instinctively accurate about assessing their own child's behavior. Therefore, it concerns me that many parents are certain that they noticed differences in their children almost immediately after their child received their vaccinations.  What has been your experience?

Don't forget! The 2011 Los Angeles Walk Now for Autism Speaks is scheduled for this Saturday, April 23. To donate to this great cause click here and to register for the walk click here.

The cause of autism (especially when it comes to vaccines) is always a heated debate. I think everyone should do their own research and decide. For my family, we have done our share of reading, speaking to professionals, and other affected families...and due to this and the way our situation happened, we strongly believe it is due to vaccines. We are not against vaccines, but we strongly recommend all new mothers to do their reseach on the chemicals in these vaccines and ask lots of questions. Spread out the number of vaccines per visit...sometimes they give 4-5 shots in one visit, I don't think that amount of chemicals in such a little body is any good. Yes parents are instinctively accurate, however I feel it is strongly influenced by what doctors tell them...and doctors have been proven to not always be right. I can go on and on about cover-up theories from the medical board and vaccine industry (we are talking billions they make on these vaccines), but ultimately we need to do more reasearch. Go out and demand research from the government, donate towards autism research programs. Do you know that only 5% of funding is given towards autism compared to other less common disorders/diseases in children? That doesn't make sense. I pray that we find a prevention/cure for this disorder soon before the risks get higher and higher.

I'm a grandfather of a wonderful 7 year old that happens to have autism. In the research I've done here online the opinions of what is causing this a very hotly debated issue. While I feel it is genetic, some "authors" can make a pretty good case otherwise. Unfortunately the development of the child and the disorder seem to be interlinked and diagnosis isn't possible until it rears it's head which happens to coincide with the vaccination schedule. Fortunately for us - we stunbled onto equine therapy. It's done wonders for my granddaughter and I want to help others in our area as well.
