JACK SPADE Men's Store Opens at Fashion Island

Orange County's first JACK SPADE, brother brand to Kate Spade, opened Saturday.

Fashion Island is home to Orange County's first JACK SPADE store, which sells the brand's apparel, bags and small goods or men.

The Newport Beach location, which opened Saturday, is the second on the West Coast, the other is in Venice.

"This is a really super strong retail area. Our guy lives around here. Fashion Island is one of the premiere malls in the country," said Cuan Hanly, Vice President and General Manager of JACK SPADE.

The Fashion Island store is set up with vintage pieces, such as toys and books, mixed in with JACK SPADE clothing and bags. There is plenty of humor, too. One hanging suit, for instance, has a picture of a kitten's head attached to the collar of the shirt.

"We like to engage our customers at every different level, and we feel our brand tells a story," Hanly said. "It's about equality, intimacy, making customers feel very at home in this space by providing great service and great communication."

Price points at the store are in line with other retailers at Fashion Island.

"If you have the right product and priced appropriately and it is unique, interesting and engaging, people will enjoy that," Hanly said.

The JACK SPADE customer, Hanly said, is "a guy who enjoys fashion, but not driven by trends. We are quite classic in our point of view. He is a guy who is interested in all aspects of fashion and art."

The brand began in 1999 as the brainchild of Andy Spade—fashion designer Kate Spade's husband and brother of SNL Alum, David Spade. "Jack" is a combination of writer Jack Kerouac and Jack Welch, CEO of General Electric, both men who inspire Spade. It all started with a single style of bag that was sold at hardware stores.

"The bag filled a void for guys, very functional and long lasting," said Hanly.
