'I Heart Puppies' to Shut Doors in CDM
However store owners says it will continue to do business online.
It's been a source of contention for seven months, but this weekend the "I Heart Puppies" Store in Corona del Mar will shut its controversial doors.
A sign posted on the store's window states the owners, Brooke and Suzanne Bradford are, "closing our store front." The sign says all store merchandise will be sold for 75 percent off, with Sunday being the store's last day. Leashes, collars, toys and other items are also being sold on Craigslist.
"I Heart Puppies will continue to provide the same quality puppies for sale on our website, where we will be able to offer a large variety of breeds," the sign said. "We personally visit our breeders and their kennels and continue to monitor them to maintain the highest level off quality."
The pet store attracted public scrutiny in July, shortly after the Companion Animal Protection Society, a nonprofit group, launched an investigation into the store after complaints from residents and assertions that the store gets its puppies from Midwest puppy mills. Carole Raphaelle Davis, west coast director of CAPS, says although the storefront will be shut down, the group will continue to keep a close eye on I Heart Puppies' online business.
"We investigate unscrupulous dog dealers all over the country and they are no match for our investigators. Let's hope they go into a business that does not involve cruelty to animals," Davis said.
I Heart Puppies and Davis have had a tense relationship since the investigations began. The store filed for a restraining order against Davis, who in return filed an anti-SLAPP motion. Court records show the restraining order was later dismissed. Along with legal issues, the controversy brought droves of protestors during boycott/adoption rallies to the storefront on East Coast Highway.
Davis said she believes the pressure by those animal rights activists led to I Heart Puppies making the decision to pack up the shop.
"The owners of I Heart Puppies were simply not able to withstand our winning formula of investigations, evidence of puppy mill cruelty and protracted protests," Davis said. "I would be popping champagne corks if they had stayed open as a 'rescue only' store selling supplies and services. That was always our goal. We offered to help them transition to a humane business model but they refused to stop selling factory-bred dogs."
Davis said CAPS now has plans to look into Russo's in Newport Beach and continung to encourage the City Council to make the sale of puppy mill dogs illegal.

And these idiots plan to continue selling their puppy mill puppies on their web site??? All puppies sold in pet stores come from puppy mills. As do the ones sold on the internet! Go CAPS. Keep the pressure on.

It is closing day for I Heart Puppies! On behalf of the mothers who suffered and will continue to be tortured and enslaved in Midwest Puppy Mills to fill the online orders of Corona Del Mar’s “ Little Pet Shop of Horrors”, I’d like to remind the Bradfords that mothers of your cruelty widgets will not be suffering in silence as you flee to hide behind your Fraudulent Website Façade. Why close shop when owners obviously have such little ambition to attack the words of humane citizens and advocates? Their Attorneys fees and those ordered by a Judge for the cost of CAPS and Carole Davis’s attorney’s fees are cutting into cruelty profits. We are telling the ugly truth and our words and our evidence will stand in a court of LAW. In my mind if you purchase a puppy from ‘I Heart Puppies” you are committing an act of cruelty enslaving the parents to the torturous treatment of the breeders of Brooke and Suzanne Bradford’s puppies.

. As long as they are selling, no matter what their claims, their dogs are coming from abusive commercial and now possibly unregulated illegal mills, through internet sales that have no oversight and are not regulated by the existence of any current laws. It is the reason for this unconscionable move in denial of practicing a humane business model in our city. In the Bradford’s store they posted a sign, “Pedigree is not a guarantee of proper breeding conditions, health, temperament, or even proper lineage.” What will they tell you now they that they have no oversight or legal obligation of California State Law?
Humane advocates including CAPS would like to remind the city of Newport Beach, there are still unanswered questions about why this store was never held in compliance of State Law when information of violation was relayed to NBPD Animal Control, the city, and council. The Department of Agriculture seems to think the rights of Companion animals are frivolous or negotiable and continue to placate them with false promises of compliance.

A court of law says that they are none of these things. The voices safeguarding their care, security, fair treatment, and right to life, would like to know why the diseased and dying Puppy Mill Pet Store Puppies rights to live free of suffering, are being disregarded and abused. The personal, business, and TWEETING relationships between The Bradfords and NB animal control officers (plural) will no doubt continue. The citizens and tax payers of Newport Beach demand unadulterated and legal protection of adherence to laws and animal control protocol for the animals residing in the city of Newport Beach. If the city can’t handle the scandalous dealings of Puppy Mill Pet Sales in Newport Beach, make the required and ethical move placing a ban on their sales for the city. It is in the best interest and welfare of the city, our citizens, and Newport families.
If you are looking for a new puppy to add as a new member of your family, but have concerns of whether you are dealing with a reputable breeder, please contact my blog or newportbeachpuppymillcruelty@gmail.com – I will be more than happy on the best interest of the animals, as well as the citizens to make a call confirming breeder’s credibility.

Please first consider saving the life of one of the beautiful souls dying for a home in our local county kill shelter, or serving a prison sentence in our own O.C. Humane Society. They are all deemed adoptable and screened for behavior problems. These animals only problem is that they were private property of uncommitted owners and they are paying by the thousands every year in Orange County with their lives and 5 million across the country. The city needs an ordinance to provide better and legally guarded safe options that increase adoptability for the homeless companion animals suffering and dying because of the selfish puppy mill pet store laws of Newport Beach. Is our entire city of citizens to be disgraced and given reputation of selfish and inhumane , while we quickly become a minority of the cities in our county committed to cruelty sales?...Not Fair Newport Beach! We are Humane Citizens and Humaneness is an Expectation of our city. Please work on that, it is not our obligation to incessantly beg for it while personal agendas remain priority. Today is a good day for the respectable business reputation of Newport Beach as I Heart Puppies closes it’s doors. Unfortunately the city is still very much Inhumane in it’s laws for companion animals and Man’s Best Friend.

I am so glad that this puppy mill selling store is closing their doors! These ladies were attempting to deceive the public by saying they got their puppies from reputable breeders. It is a fact that reputable breeders do not sell to pet stores. CAPS investigation showed where they got their puppies and it was from puppy mills. No sign in the window stating otherwise will change the facts. They could have gone humane, they decided not to and now they must shut their doors. Orange County will not stand for this type of animal cruelty in our community. Today we won one for the dogs.

http://www.forbes.com/sites/allenstjohn/2012/02/22/where-not-to-buy-a-dog-the-pet-store-connection-to-the-business-of-puppy-mills/ This says it all, good job everyone, the public listened and hopefully they were educated about this cruel business. The only way to shut down puppy mills is to not buy into the lies, adopt/rescue.

Generally I find that people like you all care more about how you treat animals than how you ACTUALLY treat other human beings. You're all quite insane...Is this really the "movement" you've chosen? Why not look at a movement that involves human or children's rights. Good job - you put another couple decent people out of business. Nice job.

Scott, what makes you think the owners of I Heart Puppies are decent people? They were lying to the public, to the police and to a judge. They themselves say we did not put them out of business. They did it to themselves. Had they been decent people, this never would have happened. We'll keep an eye on their Internet business as well.

I would have to say that a person placing judgement on others absent of knowledge and facts , is a horrible way to treat people. It is also reflects a narrow mind to think that persons of character only contribute to one cause or one species.... Read my profile...I am a blogger on the patch. I feel no need to speak for humane protesters, because their actions and values in life speak for themselves. Just as the inhumane actions ,lawlessness, and complete disregard for the various institutions these women disrespected and degraded in our community with their constant fraud and lies for personal gain.

Scott - If you are such a bleeding heart for human and children's causes, knock yourself out, but how dare you attempt to dictate what causes other people are moved to become involved in!

Scott, I fight for what I believe in. I believe in animal rights. the definition of sane is "a healthy mind in a healthy body." so insane would be the opposite of that.....mmmmm...to meet me you would meet a person who is highly educated, healthy of the mind and body and an upstanding, well educated, working individual in the community. Choose your "movement" Scott...I have choosen mine. I expect Ill find you at a human rights or childrens movement in the future and instead of calling you insane, I will applaud you.

by the way Scott what have you done for the city besides promote business running solely on fraud selling federal cruelty that's not even legal to sell in Irvine or Irvine company property..I defended the entire city of Newport Beach protecting disability rights of the disabled as the sole witness of a federal court trial......Where are you when abuse is taking place in our city.... shooting your mouth off abusing those of us who arent afraid to actually fight abuse and do all the dirty work to maintain integrity of the city so you can sit back and be supreme critic.... get a life....your statements reflect the character of someone who only helps HIMSELF .

I bought my first Shiba Inu puppy from a pet store for $800 back in 1994. His papers said he was from Missouri. Missouri is a puppy mill state. Consequently, he had a lot of medical problems. He was allergic to everything. He chewed all the fur off his butt until it bled! He was miserable all the time. His temperment was not very nice as well. The medical bills added up. I swore never again. My new Shiba Inu puppy came from an awesome breeder. I paid $2000 for pick of the litter in 2009. She is an AKC judge and very particular of who gets her puppies. She does not breed for profit but for her next show dog. Therefore, only zero to one litters a year. This shiba is perfect. He will be 3 this April and not one problem. His temperment is perfect. He has loads of personality! Puppy Mill should be banned! Never support Puppy Mills by buying a dog at a pet store or online!!!

Congratulations to all the protestors who worked so hard to let the public know the truth! I Heart Puppies is bad news just like all pet stores that sell puppies. The public was made aware of that and now I Heart Puppies is resorting to online sales so they can hide behind their computers and deceive people on the internet. Online pet stores get their puppies from mills just like any other pet stores do. Shame on them! Join Puppy Mill Awareness on Facebook to learn more! http://www.puppymillawareness.com

Bottom line, pet stores and on line pet marketers are traders in blood and pain and suffering. Are they the only cause of over-run shelters, unwanted, abused and unloved animals? no, we have much work to do on all fronts, including back yard breeders and inadequate spay/ nueter laws and enforcement. If we as a society can turn a blind eye to the suffering of these that are helpless, what are we teaching our children about respect for life, empathy, compassion. Yes, there are many causes to champion. Most people I know involved in animal rescue are involved in many areas trying to make life in their communities better. We need more champions, more miracles, better law, better enforcement and for those who don't step forward, please, just more open eyes and hearts.

Rescue organizations continue to remain a very viable alternative for those who feel the need for purebred dogs. Pet stores are just profit ventures for empty hearted entrepreneurs - nothing good comes of it for any of the product or purchasers.... Glad to know there is one less "baddie" out there
