Crystal Cathedral's New Name Revealed

The famous glass church will now be called Christ Cathedral. The change was announced during the ordination of four Catholic priests at St. Columban Church in Garden Grove.

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange revealed the new name of the Crystal Cathedral on Saturday: Christ Cathedral.

The new identity was announced during the ordination of four Catholic priests at St. Columban Church in Garden Grove. Bishop Tod D. Brown disclosed the name to more than 1,500 people who attended the ceremony.

"It was important that any change of name for the cathedral itself be respectful of its spiritual legacy while accommodating our needs to clearly define this important facility as a Catholic center of worship,” Brown said.

Church officials said Brown submitted the proposed name to the Congregation of Bishops and received approval on April 26. Also on Saturday, for the future Catholic cathedral.

In February, the Diocese of Orange of the famous glass church and later in renaming it, which sparked both serious and silly suggestions.

Although the diocese now owns the church, the first Catholic Mass won't be celebrated there anytime soon because the Crystal Cathedral's congregation is still leasing the church for its services.

“Catholics throughout the diocese, and all across America, are eagerly anticipating that important day,” Brown said.
